PIERRE S. DuPONT American businessman and management innovator. DuPont purchased the family gun-powder company in 1902, and pioneered modern industrial accounting methods. In 1920, he rescued General Motors from near bankruptcy and presided as president.

Pierre S. DuPont envisioned a hotel which matched the international prestige of the DuPont Company. Opening day, January 15, 1913, 295 guests arrived at the red carpeted door in shining Pierce Arrows, Stanley Steamers, and elegant horse-drawn carriages. During the first week alone, 25,000 visitors toured the new hotel which rivaled Europe’s finest.

Guests include a host of presidents, politicians, kings, queens, sports figures, corporate giants and celebrities like Charles Lindbergh, Ingrid Bergman, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Joe DiMaggio, John F. Kennedy, Jacques Cousteau, Elizabeth Taylor, Duke Ellington, Norman Rockwell, and Lucille Ball.
