John Jacob Astor. He built part of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel
in New York. Astor drowned with the Titanic.

Once the tallest building in the area when Astor broke ground to build the $5.5 million hotel with glorious ornate ceilings, marble floors, crystal chandeliers, antique tapestries, oriental rugs, and antique King Louis XV furniture. The hotel boasted the first central vacuum system. Originally, the library of 3,000 leather-bound gold-tooled books, included a librarian. Accommodations: Spacious rooms, each with their own sitting area. Traditional elegance found only in the most gracious residences, decorated with understated tones.
